LAURA CANNAN

Our Engagement Story

in Lifestyle on 08/28/18

I cannot believe it’s been three years since Lee proposed! I love any excuse to celebrate so tonight we plan on having some champagne to honor of this special “anniversary” and I thought it would be fun to share our proposal story for all of you!

In the summer of 2015 I was working my corporate job at JCPenney as an assistant buyer and Lee was working at the time as a land man. He was sent to Mississippi for several months for his job and we only were able to see each other every 3-4 weekends. Typically Lee would come home to Texas, but he decided to plan a trip for us to meet half way in New Orleans.

I had never been to New Orleans so I was really excited to go and obviously to see him! I had been really stressed at work and he said he would plan the whole trip, which was perfect because I was so busy I didn’t have time to do any research on things to do! Lee’s mom, aunt and grandmother were also coming and his family travels to New Orleans a lot so I thought perfect, they can take us to all the best places!

We had talked about marriage and I knew it was a possibility and hoped we would get engaged soon. Every time we saw each other (which was only every few weeks) I thought it could happen! I called my mom the day before I left and said, “mom do you think he might propose this weekend?!” and she said, “Laura – there is no way he would propose with his family there and us not there, that just wouldn’t be fair!” and that was what 100% convinced me it wasn’t going to happen! Good job, mom!

The first night we all went to dinner and stayed out super late exploring! After way too many French 75’s it was so hard to wake up the next morning. Lee was calling my hotel room over and over to wake me up and had room service deliver breakfast to also wake me up! He said he was dying to take me to this art museum before we had brunch planned at Galatoires. I thought to myself… when did Lee become so artsy?! ? He tells me to wear a nice dress and heels because Galatoires is an upscale place and we’re headed straight there after the museum.

We had to “the museum” and arrive at a park. Lee claims the concierge told him parking is a nightmare and if you walk through the park you can get there much more easily. The park is gorgeous and I have Lee take my picture to send to my mom. Meanwhile he is so nervous and I am clueless!

Awkward photo I sent my mom right before Lee proposed!

There’s a bridge and then buildings which I assume are the museum. We go over the bridge and Lee stops me and the next thing I know he is down on his knee asking me to marry him! I was so surprised and in shock! He had a photographer hiding in the bushes taking our photos! I’ll never forget it felt like Lee was down on his knee for an eternity! I was thinking I said yes!! You can stand up now! Haha! Afterwards the photographer asked if we wanted to take some photos around the gorgeous park and I was in such shock I couldn’t even talk!

We took pictures and I’m so glad we did! They are some of my favorite photos of the happiest day. Lee did such an awesome job planning the whole thing and really surprising me! We did go to Galatoires with his family and it was such a fun spot to celebrate. He also surprised me and flew back with me to Tyler for an engagement party to celebrate with all of our family and closest friends.

It was the perfect proposal and the best weekend! I had so much fun looking through all of these photos today 🙂

xoxo,

Laura
