Happy Monday, y’all! In case you missed my pregnancy announcement, we are expecting our first baby this August and we couldn’t be more excited! The first trimester is finally over, and I wanted to share my first bumpdate with you all.
I think one of the biggest things I realized early on is that no two pregnancies are the same. Everyone has such different experiences! I think getting through the first trimester just feels like a victory, and gives you so much more peace of mind that your chance of miscarriage is far less likely.
The best part of the first trimester was definitely getting to see the baby at our appointments and of course telling all of our friends and family. We had a 9 week appointment to confirm the pregnancy with a sonogram and got to see Baby C for the first time and hear the heartbeat! After that everything started to feel a lot more real! The 12 week appointment (for me at least) they asked us all about our family medical history and at my doctor’s office you typically do not get a sonogram at that appointment. She couldn’t find the heartbeat with the Doppler device (which scared us to death) so we got to have a sonogram. It blew our minds how big the baby had grown in just 3 weeks – it was amazing!! 🙂
12 week appointment/sonogram!
The first trimester was full of ups and downs! My emotions were definitely going crazy! Happy one minute and crying the next! After finding out the last week of November I was pregnant, I felt like the entire month of December I was more exhausted than I had ever been! I am not a napper and was taking naps almost every day. Other than being so tired, I was extremely lucky to not feel physically sick at all. I had a few days where I felt slightly nauseous, usually because I hadn’t eaten. I have a feeling my next pregnancy I won’t be quite as lucky!
Lee snapping me our first time shopping for baby!! haha
First Trimester Must Haves (for me at least!):
App I love: Ovia Pregnancy is my personal favorite of all the pregnancy apps. It gives you a daily update of whats going on with your baby and a daily article about a pregnancy topic that typically applies to the week you are currently in. I also have The Bump & What to Expect When You’re Expecting apps but I rarely check them. Ovia also has a fertitility app you can use before you get pregnant to track your cycle/ovulation that is really helpful!
What I’m reading: During the 1st trimester I have been reading What to Expect When You’re Expecting. A lot of people don’t like this book and think it can cause a lot of unnecessary anxiety. I personally don’t feel that way. I keep up with reading it based on which month I am in and don’t get ahead so I am reading as I go! If I think the information doesn’t apply to me, I just skip over that part.
What my husband’s reading: Lee is not a big reader, but he has been reading The Expectant Father: The Ultimate Guide for Dads-to-Be and seems to be enjoying it! 🙂
Pregnancy Journal: My sweet bestie who is pregnant with me got me this Erin Condren journal for Christmas and it’s so cute inside! I love keeping track of everything happening each week so I will remember all the details from this pregnancy. My sister-in-law is also pregnant and I got her this journal/devotional called Waiting in Wonder: Growing in Faith While You’re Expecting
Noodle & Boo Elasticity Oil to hopefully prevent stretch marks! I will report back if it works haha! I’ve also heard Almond Oil works really well.
Womb Heartbeat Baby Monitor: a co-workers of Lee’s told him about this Doppler you could order from Amazon. I ordered it because I would get so nervous in-between appointments that something was wrong. It’s so hard in the early weeks because you don’t necessarily feel pregnant. This has been so fun to use and I am really glad I bought it! Its also been fun to let our parents, siblings, and grandparents hear the heartbeat and make it all more real for them.
You read a lot of really bad pregnancy stories on the internet (not to mention you hear crazy stories from friends/family) and it can be a bit overwhelming. I hope my experience can encourage any of you who are anxious about pregnancy, because it really has been such a positive and fun pregnancy for me so far! I truly am loving being pregnant! (yes I miss wine & sushi, but I’m okay!)
I read early on in my pregnancy to never use your pregnancy as an excuse for complaining or saying you cannot do things. I am SO glad I read this because it has really stuck with me. Obviously, as I get further along there will be things I cannot do but It’s a good reminder for me in these early days/weeks. It’s very easy to slip down a negative rabbit hole, but every weird pain and nauseous moment can’t take away from the joy of growing a tiny human!
I’m so excited to start showing in the next few weeks! We are counting down the days until we get to meet this precious baby! 🙂
xo,
Laura

I just discovered your blog! I love it. Congrats on being pregnant. Having a baby is the best thing ever. Our Grady is 8 weeks old and we are totally in love. My advice is get a doona car seat. It turns into a stroller! Best money ever spent. 🙂
